This is big news in Japan. Tsuma-san was talking about this the other day. Depending on your POV there's a couple of different takes on this. How can an association prevent somebody from traveling? The doctor who examined him is supposedly not a psychiatric doctor. That the JSA is doing this and the two basho ban as a way of assuring a Japanese wrestler wins a bout. Feel free to speculate on racist motives, everybody else is.

Yeh you gotta figure homesickness eventually gets to some of the foreign wrestlers but at same time, really this isn't baseball. Anyone getting into sumo knows full well the expectations.
Akebono went into pro-fighting/wrestling, from what I could gather to cover some debts from his restaurant (or some such)
